I’m back in the same house; the house seems oddly familiar. I hear the child calling, “Mommy, Mommy, wake up.” I run through the house, searching for the voice that is calling out to me. “Mommy, Mommy, wake up, please!” I hear again and turn the corner into one of the bedrooms. Two small children are in the room, one small little girl is hovering over her mother begging for her to wake up. The other child is playing blissfully on the floor, both children dirty and unkempt. Bile rises in my throat because I have been there before, forgotten children and their resentful parents. The little girl with bright red curls looks at me with tears in her eyes. “Mommy won’t wake up and I hungry,” she whispers and moves toward her brother. Fear strikes me when I see the bottles that litter the floor near their prone mother stretched out on the bed. I walk slowly up to the woman who is passed out drunk on the bed while her children are dirty and hungry. I gently pull the blanket back and I scream.

Fear shoots through me as I sit upright in bed, breathing heavily, fighting to pull in air.

“Missy, baby, what happened?” I turn and see Torren panting trying to catch his breath.

“It was just a bad dream; I’m sorry, did I hit you when I woke up?” I ask, leaning back into the pillows.

“Missy, baby, you were screaming in your sleep.” The look of concern in his eyes breaks my heart.

“Tell me about the dream,” he says lazily, grazing his fingers over my shoulder and down my back.

“It’s so real. I’m at this house. I recognize the house but not sure where from. There are these two kids there. They couldn’t be more than three years old. The little boy is dirty and playing on the floor with some random toys. Maybe, I don’t really pay attention to what he’s playing with. The little girl is trying to wake her mommy up and she’s begging her to wake up and her mother doesn’t respond. The little girl looks up at me and she begs me to wake her mommy up because she’s hungry.” I sob out.

“I don’t understand. Then why did you scream?” he asks, wiping tears away.

“I go to wake up their mother. I notice all these empty bottles laying around on the ground near her. When I pull back the covers, I see their mother and it’s me. I’m their mother drunk and passed out just like my mother used to be,” I finish sagging in relief.

“Oh, baby, that will not be you. You’re not like your parents, just like I’m not like my mother and her piece of crap husband. We will love our children better and harder than ever because of how our parents treated us. I promised you more than once, I will do whatever I need to do to make sure I protect you and them with everything I have in me.
